is there any point to forwarding ports to squid?

is there any point to forwarding ports to squid?
eg forwarding port 80 to 3128 or 8080 to 3128?
Couldn't we just change the listening port in the squid conf?

Is there any security reason that port forwarding would be better?

Yes. The idea is that your gateway forwards port 80 or 8080 to 3128, Squid does it's thing and then outputs the packet on port 80 or 8080.

But what's the point?
WHy not just get squid to listen to port 80 or 8080 directly?

The point is, most of these port are standard service ports, and many applications tie these ports to specific services, hence for the sake of standardisation, ......

HOWEVER, you can still make your squid listen to port 80 without any problems as long as you are aware how different devices will treat port 80.
