Help with migrating an older Fedora 14 Linux Server

Hi all,

I have inherited an older Fedora 14 linux web/mailserver and am hoping to migrate it to the latest version of Ubuntu server.

It has sendmail with mailscanner, spamassassin, clamav, mailwatch etc currently running on it as well as horde/imp webmail. I want to move the existing mail/accounts over to the new server. I am planning on using postfix instead of sendmail and possibly iredmail for the web based email. Are there any tools to help with the migration of the mail and users accounts that will work for me? It looks like mail is being stored at /var/spool/mail and the /home directories.

Would I be better off staying with Fedora? I know a lot of people don't recommend using it in a production environment. This is for a small business with around 25 employees.

Thanks for any pointers to migration tools you might suggest.

Tim

Setup another server or vm with your distro of choice. Then migrate one service at a time until they are all moved, testing as you go. There likely aren't any "tools" beyond manually doing it between multiple distros, much less entirely different programs even with similar functions.

As said, migrating one service at a time is the best way to go, and given the age of Fedora 14, going to new hardware is the best as well. So since you can run in parallel, that makes things simple.

You *SHOULD* be able to install the services you listed, then copy the config files over. However...you will most likely have to deal with some version incompatibilities with those things. Some features may be deprecated, some may have a syntax change, etc. Just trying to start the service will give you the error(s)/message(s) to deal with. You should (?) be able to copy the /var/spool/mail folder over, as well as the /home folders as well, but you'll obviously have to create the users/passwords as well.

Sorry...just no easy way to do this. Just going to have to claw through one service at a time.
