Question `screen` program freezes

screen version 4.00.02 (FAU) 5-Dec-03 running on CentOS.

From time to time, the program freezes. ps shows it in 'pause' state. It might be due to something I typoed immediately before the freeze (though I can't remember what or replicate it), and I know sometimes it isn't (because I haven't been near the computer).

When it freezes, programs trying to output to a screen can get hung in write_ state.

Any ideas about (1) how to unfreeze, (2) what causes the freeze, (3) how to prevent the freeze?

(Attempting to find an answer has convinced me that program names that are common words is a bad idea.)

It's actually CTRL+A CTRL+Q, and I've tried it. CTRL+A CTRL+S is sometimes the cause, and that handles it; but other times, something else is the cause, which is what I'm trying to track down.

It just happened again; I thought I typed CTRL+A 0, but my fingers must have slipped.

screen is in pause mode; ps says

0 500 15046 15014 16 0 5372 920 pause S+ pts/0 0:00 screen -d -R

attempting screen -d -R from a new connection has no effect; the running screen ignores it. Is there any way to unpause it?
`kill -2` has no effect on it.

(I just found that leaving screen -d -R running, and killing the connection to the hung process, gets it running again.)
