To deliberately disconnect?

Looking for a shell command to disconnect the PC from Internet, and also for its dual (to reconnect it back)? If relevant, it the case of a desktop, with LAN card, fixed IP address, no proxy and no network at all.
Thanks!

command

ifdown ethN

where N = interface number (usually 0) for a computer with 1 interface)

converse is:

ifup ethN

some distributions support:

/etc/init.d/networking stop

/etc/init.d/networking restart

I think this is what you are after.

nice! how about disconnecting an external 56k modem (so I can make it into a cron job and not get up at 5 to 8 every day to disconnect)
