I hope all are great now on to my problem
with snort-2.3.1, each time i try to run snort
i get this error here
snort: error while loading shared libraries: libpcap.so.0.8.3: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory
now that file above i had to go & download. installed
it but it seems like snort can't find it ???? help
also can someone tell me why is it that when
i goto login to my puter i have my user name,
but i now have this here "Snort Snort" i'm talking about
the login screen when you bootup suse.
now i did not have this "Snort Snort" on bootup
with suse9.0 Pro just suse9.2 i also had no need
to install this libpcap
Yes you did, though the system may not have told you.
A snort user for the snort IDS to run as is completely normal, though it could just as easily be named 'joe', but that wouldn't really tell you what it was for now would it.
As for libpcap -- It's going to be fairly impossible for snort to do what you want it to do without a packet capture library ... install the libpcap RPM for Suse, not just the library file itself.
