Question root login incorrect ,then passwd root,but error


help me , i am a newbie....
i forgot root password ,then i want change a new password
using passwd command,but fail ...now i only login system through
linux single mode, can you help me?

run redhat 6.2(Zoot) ,kernel 2.2.14-5.0 on an i586.

apsswd error information: use not known to the underlying
authentication module

lilo boot: linux single

login conf. file:
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
passwd required /lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
passwd required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so nullok
use_authok md5 shadow
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
session optional /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

passwd conf. file:
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
passwd required /lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
passwd required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so use_authok nullok
md5 shadow

when lilo loads press ctrl+x and then type linux single
it will boot you into single user mode. there you can chang e the password

If there aren't any business apps running on that box that *really* need the current configuration, please update to a more recent distro. RH6.2 is way out of date with even more exploits than a warthog got lice, even that kernel you're using has got vulnerabilities.

The "user...auth module" thing points to some problem with PAM. If changing your password in single mode doesn't work
check if your password and shadow files and login and PAM packages are not corrupt. The only difference I could find for /etc/pam.d/login is in the last line:
change "session optional /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so" to read "session optional /lib/security/pam_console.so".
If that doesn't work, you could try if re-installing PAM works.

sorry, i have't writing clearly.

after i go into single user mode, i change my password using passwd , fail ...
error information is : use not known to the underlying

I don't know how to configure related pam.d file, fix
my login process.

Open it in your favourite editor. Then try switching back to your original runlevel and try to login.

I switch back to my original runlevel ,but can't login .
i want that the related conf. files is bad...Can you explain how to PAM work ? init configure etc..

HOW TO RECOVERY original Login ? How to modify conf. files?
give me detail..
