persistent home dir with cryptsetup

hi,

I have been using loop-aes to create an encrypted home directory that I use to backup files from a live CD knoppix style.
I like the system because it's easy to mount, self contained, transparent and I can move the .img encrypted file from lets say a USB pendrive to another etc.
I have read that loop-aes is being replaced by cryptsetup as the new linux standard.
I'd like to know how to create the same function with cryptsetup or at least some exhaustive howto

thanks
