Well, if you will keep using the internet only with the normal user, and not with the root, even if cracker do hits you, he can't harm the system, because he don't have the privileges.

Wasn't Windows 3.1 released in like 1992?
I thought Linux (which came out in 1991) is built to act in ways that Unix does which goes back to the late 60's

Linux is based on Unix, which predates Windows. But Linux isn't quite the same as Unix.
So, yes, Linux is "newer" than Windows, but it uses many stable concepts "borrowed" from Unix.

Well as long as the superuser account is not locked (i.e. password scrambled) and especially if sudo is used without care, there is a real possibility of somebody gaining root privileges, for example by stealing the root password. It's not even "difficult" if the system is not well secured, and many of today's Newbie-aimed-distributions are not that secured. This is a danger on every system, of course..
