IPtables

Is it possible to have iptables block or allow access to the Internet at an application level. I know I may asked this is past for example only allowing Mozilla to access the Internet and not say IE. Is this possible at all?

i assume we are talking about a router firewall since IE wont run on a linux box ?

nope... as far as iptables is concerned, there is no difference between IE traffic and Firefox traffic.

qwijibow,

That is correct. I am talking about a Linux Firewall. Would there be any software that works in conjunction with iptables that may assist me for example blocking IE or a set of software.

Possibly, but only on the machine running the software...
im assuming your talking about a gateway / router.... (that serves internet connectivity to other boxes.

a gateway / router cannot know the difference between Firefox genrerated traffic and IE traffic.

for all the linux users, you should set up group acounts to controll who can run what software.
