Can anyone recommend WEP crack program?

Hey:

I am wondering if anyone in this forum have tried to crack WEP, I need some recommendation which one is working...

This is given as a starting point of a research project, but 3,4 months passed I don't have much progress. With great effort, i managed to set up wireless LAN with SuSE. The first and only cracking program I am using is weplab, but it doesn't seem to me working.

Can anyone who has successfully done it or has experience on it share the information? Before I try, I want to make sure it works. I am using SUSE 9 and my wireless card is waveLAN/IEEE.

thanks in advance

hi,

unless you don't use it for bad purpose i'd reccomend AirSnort.

good luck with your project

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! It's purely for study purpose, an assignement given by my prof to get me familiar with wireless security. I am absolutely a newbie in Linux and security, but I am wishing some day I can become an expert But before that day finally comes, I have to ask some stupid questions, please don't laugh at me

My question is: Do I need to run some other programs to capture packets before I can use airSnort? for example, using kismet or tcmdump. I don't know how to use kismet, so I wish the answer is no.

I tried Airsnot on STD-Knoppix (version 3.2 i believe), my wireless card is "waveLAN/IEEE" (orinocco_cs). But when I click "start", it says "can't set monitoring mode". So I use this command: iwpriv eth0 monitor 2 6" and was given error: invalide command: monitor.

The strange thing is when I use the same card, same command on SuSE 9, it gives no error. Does anyone know what is wrong with my operation?

I am not sure if it is related, when I try to run kismet, it says "... SSID 95: operation not supported"... With my configuration, I can browse Internet and ping, so I assume my configuratoin of wireless card is correct...

your problem that it works with suse but not knoppix is probably that suse is more of a complete distro with more things here and there. probably with knoppix some dependency is missing which gives you that error.

about airsnort, i personally haven't used it. just heard/read about it. so i can't help you with that.

as far as i know, airsnort is a stand alone program, so it should do the job by itself. some other tools which might help you out with your project you might find
here.

good luck

Make a couple of bookmarks http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1783 and http://securityfocus.com/infocus/1785 and look forward for part III as it becomes available. As you can guess with right tools, knowledge and patience you can learn a lot about wireless LAN security and vulnerabilities, how to sircumvent and protect your wireless LAN. I assume you have at least basic background on TCP/IP, so I would also advice to take an advanced TCP/IP class if it is offered in your program and if you haven't yet done so.
Good luck.
