did you buy the REQUIRED license ?
then register your install?

if not you DO NOT install any software on RHEL
RHEL is NOT FREE

buy the license
or
install one of the free rebuilds
CentoS6.3
or
ScientificLinux6.3

True radhat is not free, you should know. Try fedora or CentOS, you find most rpms to install at rpm.pbone.net for free. type "rpm -qa" to see installed rpms, try using grep to be specific.
That dollar sign means you arent root. You need to be root to install apps type su - root and supply your passord the dollar will turn into a #.

also i forgot to add that
If this is indeed a registered install of the older rhel6.1 ( RHEL 6.3 is current)
trying to install a FULL name of something will almost always fail ( there are exceptions)

for a paid for and registered RHEL install
try this -BUT openJDK is already installed by default .
- i am using SL 6.3 so if you are on 6.1 ???? jdk 1.6.0 might be it
Code:
su -
yum search openjdk
---- then from the list "copy/paste" the name ------
-----if on the list then ------
yum install java-1.7.0-openjdk
