why is ifconfig not persistent

Hi all

Technically, ifconfig is not persistent with its changes because it doesn't write to the files under /etc/.../networks/. But why doesn't it do that?

It works so well, so easily, at changing IPs on interfaces why can it not be persistent?

Thanks

Because that's not what the program was designed to do. It was created to display/set network information dynamically, not permanently. That's why there are network managers and other network-related scripts.

Because if you want persistent network information, you need to either use the tools that write the network files (like network managers do), or you edit the interface files to your liking.
