Which distros have most recent ALSA version?

I'm contemplating switching to a different distribution if I can't get my Audigy 2 Value (SB0400) to work in Mandrake 10.1. How would I go about finding which distributions have what versions of ALSA, or for that matter what Kernel version comes with each distro?

Mandrake is running ALSA 1.0.6. There's supposedly a patch in 1.0.7 or 1.0.8 that allows the system to detect the A2V. I've tried updating ALSA using numerous methods.

Earlier today I figured out how to get the kernel source code on my system and with that I was able to make install the 1.0.8 drivers and the 1.0.8 libs. For some reason, the utils couldn't get past make. (details at thread: )alsa-utils-1.0.8 fails during Make )

Since I haven't done much with Linux yet, I reinstalled the distrio and tried the RPMdrake approach. I found a server with what I thought were ALSA drivers, and installed the following packages:

alsa-utils-1.0.8-2.mdk10.1.thac
libalsa2-1.0.8-3.mdk10.1.thac
libalsa-data-1.0.8-3.mdk10.1.thac

They're supposedly installed, but they don't seem to be doing anything. At this point I wouldn't be able to remove them without removing several depending packages.

I've also tried using CVS, which failed without the kernel source, but I haven't returned to that approach since installing the source.

Please help this young padawan in his goal to rid himself of the dark side, etc, etc.

"How would I go about finding which distributions have what versions of ALSA, or for that matter what Kernel version comes with each distro?"

You can use DistroWatch:

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=

You can go directly to a distribution program list with:

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mandrake

"They're supposedly installed, but they don't seem to be doing anything. At this point I wouldn't be able to remove them without removing several depending packages."

You can remove them using the rpm --nodeps option. Then keeping track of dependencies becomes your problem instead of Mandrake's:

rpm --nodeps -e alsa
