When I select restart, my Ubuntu screen goes black but doesnt power off (similar for power off)

Hi All,

I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my laptop last night and notice that when I select restart it goes into an unresponsive black screen with a small white cursor at the top left. If I select power off, I get a black screen with the Dell and Ubunto logo but nothing happens.
I unstalled Ubuntu as a dual boot with Windows 11 home where I partitioned the drive to be 550G for windows and 350G for Linux.

Other than this the Linux OS appears to be operating fine with what Ive done with it so far. Just now I need to manually power off by holding down the power button for 10s (dont see this as being a very good long term solution).

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu so no idea where to start debugging this.

My laptop details are as follows:
Model:
Dell Inspiron 16 7620
CPU:
Intel Core i7-1260P
4 x 2.10 GHz (P-Core), 8 x 1.50 GHz (E-Core)

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,
Diarmuid

It's a shot in the dark, but try, as root, issuing the reboot and shutdown (shutdown now -h) commands from the command line. Maybe you'll get some useful error messages to the terminal.

Also, you might check the log files. I'd start with /var/log/syslog.

Over times I have seen this happening, usually it is some hardware (BIOS) quirk, which, if it is common enough may get neutralized by kernel developers. In some cases BIOS upgrade may fix it.

Thanks frankbell / Emerson,

Yes, from the below post it seems this is not uncommon:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1964851

My kernel version is 6.2.0-26-generic

I guess I should just wait for an update to this kernel and hope it gets resolved.

When it is updated, what is the safest way to update it (for a Linux newbie like myself!)?

Below link gives a nice guide to this:

https://phoenixnap.com/kb/how-to-update-kernel-ubuntu

1. Update repositries with:

sudo apt-get update

2. Run an upgrade with:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Would you reccomend this procedure? Will it even update my kernel?

Thanks,

Diarmuid

Actually 'sudo apt-get upgrade' will get you latest kernel. The apt-get target dist-upgrade is what it looks like, for upgrading to the next release of your distro.
