When I go Ctrl+Alt+F1 my screen turns black ...

... like when the monitor is on and the PC is shut down.
There is no prompt, the screen is blank.
I run Ubuntu 12.04LTS with unity
Ctrl+Alt+F7 goes back to the desktop. The top control panel and the launcher work ok but my wallpaper gets messed up.
Rebooting returns everything to normal.
I've been messing around in bash but I stay away from Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Any ideas ?

could be that your system is not configured to run on F1 screen. does it do the same thing for F2-F6?

... these key combos produce the same results.
Pls be patient and explain to this LQ Newbie what is a system that is not configured to run on screen F1.
