what version of linux is used in linux Beta on chromebook

The newer chromebooks have linux beta, No need to install crouton
like before.

I googled search this but I get instructions on enabling it.

I have two questions:

What version of linux is it? Debian, crouton, etc...

Is it stable or is it better to use crouton instead?

Thx
