Thumbs up vlc player 1.1.0


i am new to linux I am trying to upgrade vlc player to 1.1.0 i have the download file but do not have a clue how to install or upgrade. there is no exe file like windows
Please help me.

What OS you are running? What is the format of the downloaded VLC file? Is it rpm or tar.gz?
