usb interrogation

Is there a cli command to interrorgate a usb device? e.g. bring up whatever string it sends when connecting to something?
Also, is there any cliu method to set a string that your computer sends to attached devices?

Have you tried
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
to find it?

Did you make a mount point like:
Code:
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdrive/
