[SOLVED] upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 or 14.10

Hi,
is it necessary to back-up the documents, pictures etc. before upgrading to the higher version?

There is always a possibility that something will go wrong so if you value the data, back it up first. If you want to upgerade, do it to 14.04 or possibly 15.04 since as you can see at the link below, support for 14.10 ended several days ago.

As I learned around 40 years ago the three fundamental rules of PCs are the following:
1. Backup
2. Backup
3. Backup
Even if you weren't upgrading Ubuntu you should be backing up the files you would hate to lose straight away. I'd suggest a weekly backup would give you one less thing to worry about in this troubled world.
