depending on your distro you can just use autofs and create a cifs mount point.

was my learning curve on autofs. love it now for accessing cifs mount points.
if you are trying to access a local partition from a dual boot system, you can still add an fstab entry.
partition_info mount_point file_type auto,stuff 0 0
is the basic for an fstab entry.
