hello good people,I want to thank you again for your advice.i found out that not only did i not understand the program system, i had a faulty pc and was fighting a poor dialup problem.i visited my son last week in seattle wa.he found that my pc was bad,he put one together for me and had no problem installing ubuntu 8.10. he had a faster system to the internet.we did experience some problems when downloading the update packages,we received a corrupted file in which we couldn't reboot.also he wasn't a linux fan,but he put up with his father anyway.i am also happy to report maybe by the end of the week i have satellite internet,it will be a great change for this old man.i have also ordered more linux books to help me with understanding some of the system.

have a nice day lary
