Ubuntu (7.10) -VLC media player will not play Nero 7 burned Data DVDs (mkv files)

I burned about 12 dvds, all of which are MKV files which will not play on my Linux laptop (I am not sure if it because it a Nero 7 problem (which said it would play on all Windows Platforms but nothing about not of the other platforms) or whethere I just need a codex for mkv files. Freel free to to shoot me a few ideas on how to fix this please?

No, the movie player that comes with Linux is Totem and more often than not it comes with only a small selection of the available codecs. MPlayer is something else, quite powerful. I tend to prefer SMPlayer, that is essentially the same thing but it has a far richer GUI. You may also want to try Xine with gstreamer, which I have on occasion found capable of playing things that the other ones could not handle at all. Also make sure to install as many gstreamer plug-ins as you can (good, bad, ugly, very ugly, etc.).

What is to understand? Just open Synaptic (under the System menu), check off mplayer smplayer (g)xine and gstreamer related packages and click on apply.
