two questions: partitioning and Wifi

OK, so I'll start by saying a am a very new user. I've been trying to learn more about linux from various forums and books but have a couple of questions.

1) I have used the knoppix cd and have played around a bit on my laptop and all seems well. However, it would be nice to run LINUX faster (and possibly try another Distro). I want to partition my hard drive but do not have the installation disk for windows (it came pre-installed) and when I defrag the report still show a few unmovable files towards the 'empty' end of my hardrive and I'm worried about losing them if I partition. Any suggestions?

2) Kind of leading on from the first question, I also usually use wireless access to the Internet and from what I have read wifi isn't well supported by linux. Suse seemed to be the only suggestion I have seen and this would require partitioning - see question! Are there any alternatives?

Thanks in advance,

Adam

1) You need to move that files out of the end of the drive. No resizeing program I know would allow you to shrink a partition below the end of the last file. So...note down the filenames, remove their attributes that make them unmovable (system and hidden, I think), defrag and set the attributes again. At last in the old days it worked

2) It depends on your card. I'd recommend you to a) check the hardware database http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php b) check the Wireless forum http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...php?forumid=41 (most common cases are often discussed).

Thanks for your help but how do I find out which files are unmovable? I have done a defrag and have 4 green 'unmovable file' lines of varying thickness but do not get any information about them in the report.

As far as I rememeber there's a way to check filename in defrag when you clik the right place. But don't know how to do it.
