Hi, I am a total Linux newbie and have recently installed Suse 9.1 Personal. When I try to boot I get a message saying "Sync out of Range".

Now I have searched these forums and determined that it is not an uncommon problem with people suggesting that you need to do XF86Config and change the vertical and horizontal rates.

But given that I am total newbie this is double dutch to me.
I can get Linux to open in a text only mode and after I enter my username and password I get to a prompt.

Would someone please be able to tell me what I do to refresh the rates of my monitor from the prompt?

My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 753s with Sync Rates of 30-70 Horizontal and 50-160 Vertical if that is any help.

(p.s. I have tried keying in things like /etc/XII/XF86Config at the prompt but to no effect)

Thanks for the link. It taught me a lot but after folllowing the instructions I still get the same message. Now I know 100% that I put the right sync ranges in but it still says Range out of Sync.
I can't think what to do about it.

And I had been told that Suse was straight forward. At this rate I'll have to try a Mac instead.

what video card do you have? what resolutions or screens did you configure?

u may get gui.
this rotates the display

and u will have to either use XF86config or edit the file manually to get it working

My video card is an Intel 82810E with roughly 4mb of memory (slightly above that).

Other details are 256 mb ram, 1.3ghz processor.

I'm not sure whether to try a different monitor or what now.

what screens did you configure? you may need to give the xserver some options. did you choose the intel810 driver during configuration?

Thanks everyone for your help. Peacedog the installation guide helped alot and at least now I now it is set up for the right monitor and video card.
But in the end it was Masand's suggestion that fixed it. I can't believe it was something so simple.
It took me a while but now I am on with Linux.
