I'm going to show how green I am by asking a question that will likely make most of you laugh. I use Thunderbird for e-mail on Ubu 10.04 and removed the little envelope icon for Evolution mail from the top panel. Problem is, I seem to have also [inadvertently] removed the speaker icon with the volume slider. Are these somehow linked, or is it possible to remove two at the same time? Regardless of the answer to that, is there a way I can add it (volume control) back? It was really handy and I miss it. TIA!

actually you deleted the notification area . I my self think it is way to easy to do this. go to the panel where it used to be right click you will see add to panel click it then choose notification area you may have to move it back to that area play with that and learn it.

Thanks Drakeo, I added back the notification area per your instructions, but it's empty. How can I add the speaker icon back to it?

right click the panel then click add to panel then choose volume control.

But that option is not there, Drakeo. They're alphabetically sorted and jump from 'User Switcher' to 'Weather Report', neither of which interest me at this time. No option is listed beginning with a 'V'. I really do appreciate your trying to help. Any other ideas?

open a terminal and type one other way is to. click show hidden files since you just installed you will not have much to copy over if any.

You absolutely 'da man, Dude! Alt+F2 > gnome-volume-control-applet did it. You can bet this is one tip I'll be saving. Now you can go help someone else. Until I screw something else up, that is. :-) Thanks loads!

Oops! I thought -- Alt+F2 > gnome-volume-control-applet -- had solved the problem, but it apparently only does so for the current session. Reboot and the icon is gone again. Is there a shorter way to [permanently] restore it, short of the folder renaming thingie? I'll do that if it's the only way to permanently restore the icon, but am very apprehensive about it. Is there anything in Ubu/Linux similar to either a macro or a DOS batch file that could be put into something similar to a Windows Startup folder to automatically run the above command on each reboot? Or, assuming the answer is Yes, would doing so be even more dangerous? TIA!

You can rename /home/your-user/.gnome2 to .gnome2.old folder log out and log back in. it'll recreate your speaker icon. then just copy anything you need from the old .gnome2 folder to the newly system created one. good luck
or add gnome-volume-control-applet to your start up file
