slow internet speed with zenda usb wireless adapter on Mint 9
Hi, i have a zenda w322u usb wireless adapter that gives a good connection to wireless router but seems to give very poor download performance compared to my laptop. Are there settings that i can access for this adapter to improve its performance.
Hi Markus,
And thanks for the reply. Yes the computer has USB 2, the motherboard is an intel DG45FC so is relatively new. Below is the output from lsusb.
Your help is much appreciated.
Tschuss.

Well, what about your router. Would you please post which router you are using?
Provided that the wlan-configuration on your computer is correct (if the connection is always immediately created, this would be the case), I'd look at the router.
First aid would be to restart it (the router!). The next step is to check if the firmware of the router is the latest version.
When you say that downloading files is such slow. Please describe this more precisely: is the rate constant or does it increase or decrease?
Hi Markus,
Thanks for reply, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
OK, what i have found so far is that if i use my laptop to talk wirelessly to the router the internet connection speed seems fine which would indicate router is OK and if i use my computer with a wired connection it is also fine (up to 200 kb/s) however if i use my computer with the USB wireless adapter teh download speed seems to have a max of 60kb/s. I have also noticed that some programs will not even connect when using the USb wireless adapter but connect fine using a wired connection or using a wirelss connection from the laptop. All this would indicate that there is a setting on the USB wireless adaptor that is effecting the speed. Could it be that i do not have the correct drivers? However linux seemed to detect the unit fine so i assumed that the correct drivers were installed.
please post the output of lsusb, ifconfig and please search in the output of lsmod for modules related to the USB-wireless-device.
Which OS do you run on your laptop? Can you compare the networksettings of the two computers?
Could you please post the networksettings for your USB-wireless-device? I don't have any experience with mint, so I don't know where to look for those settings (anywhere in /etc).
Do you know, which programms you use for the wireless-connection, i.e. wicd, wpa_supplicant or or/and others?
Hi Markus,
I think you may have been right about the modem maybe. I now have good internet speed. This is what i did:
Deleted wireless settings for usb adapter.
Restarted computer with usb adapter attached so that OS would reconfigure it.
Found good connection to router but no internet connection.
Checked wiring from router to wall and restarted router - still no internet.
Connected to router wirelessly via its IP adress and did a diagnostic test and found no adsl and no ping - hence why no internet.
Adjusted aerial and repeated test - adsl good and ping is now good and i have internet connection and good speed.
This however does no explain how i could connect OK with my laptop and no one else in the house had any problems connecting.
But for now seems to be OK.
Thanks very much for all your help. If you have any ideas for the issues i have had let me know.
