I deleted the files that I got from running the tar. I downloaded j2sdk-1_4_0-linux-i386-rpm.bin from sun. I ran the bin and then the rpm and it installed java to usr/java. I login as a regular user and start the star office installation and again and it still says it can not find a jre. I browsed to the usr/java, /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0, /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0/jre, etc. and each time is says it can not find it. So i looked for my java version and got this:

[tbarden@tbarden /]$ java -version

java version "1.4.0"

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-b92)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-b92, mixed mode)

Can someone please help me figure this thing out. Thanks!

you know, you can install staroffice without the java... just click ok and it will bypass it..

How would it run differently without java? Would I lose any functionality or anything?

well, i use it occasionally and never find problems with the basics with it. i guess anything that is directly needed using java would lose its functionability. might want to look at sun's site and they probably have a list of what needs the java installed to use in StarOffice.
