I am trying to install the Quake 3 point release for linux, on Yellow Dog 3.0, PPC.

Here is the issue I am having:

This installation doesn't support glibc-2.1 on Linux / ppc
(tried to run setup)

When I do a gcc -v in command window, I get this:

So it looks like I am a version up, can anyone provide any guidance?

try getting the latest stable version of glibc, which is 2.3.2:

http://www.gnu.org/directory/GNU/glibc.html

I believe I have 2.2.5 installed - how can I check?

When I am trying to compile the source for the newest -

[root@glibc-2.3.2]# ./configure
configure: error: you must configure in a separate build directory
[root@ glibc-2.3.2]#

Actually sorry my mistake but you're probably better off updating it using the updated packages provided by your distro, if they have them. Updating glibc manually isn't really a good idea unless you know what you're doing, it can be disasterous.
Look at the glibc directory name in /usr/share/docs for its version.
As for the problem, besides getting updated packages for the distro, sorry I've no idea.
