Disabled ufw firewall and flushed iptables. Problem with connection still here. Is it risky having firewall inactive?

It's ok when you are in your home network behind a router. It's risky when you are in public wifi networks

As long as you are at home I'd leave it disabled for debugging purposes.

Ok. Did you try
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Before doing

Code:
sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek
?

Yes. I ran
Code:
sudo apt-get update
successfully but then got

Code:
 sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package firmware-realtek

Hmm, strange. Seems like Ubuntu is naming packages different here. Maybe a last idea to verify if the right driver is installed.
Can you post the output
Code:
ls /lib/firmware
Now that the firewalls is disabled are there any interesting differences when you type the commands that show your system logs?

Code:
dmesg | grep wlan
cat /var/log/kern.log | grep wlan | tail -n 50
(Be aware that a reboot might have enabled the firewall again)

And do the logs look different now?
If there is nothing there I am running out of ideas...
Your /lib/firmware directory has a RTL8192E, I am wondering if this is used by your system, and if it would be better to have a lib that has the exact name of your chipset. But I wouldn't know which package your distro would need to get it.
If it was my computer I would probably try to download a driver directly from realtek and compile it if needed. But I am not confident enough to be able to guide you through that process.
If you feel like trying you could go ahead and search "realtek driver RTL8192CU ubuntu" or similar.

Actually this driver is supposed to be in the kernel, I am just thinking that you may need a more recent version, so it might be worth a try...

Thanks for all your efforts. I really appreciate it. Not sure if I'll try downloading realtek driver RTL8192CU as I still haven't mastered how to run(execute) programmes from Downloads folder or even cd's. Usually get message sayin "no such file or directory" or "not a valid path" even when I paste "home/joseph/Downloads/file name. Think I'll give up gracefully. Thanks again.

You are welcome, sorry I could not help you fix this. The new Mint LTS release is probably going to be released very soon. (Ubuntu LTS is due this month, and Mint is typically being released one month after Ubuntu or so). You may want to give that a try. Maybe it picks up your hardware a bit better since it ships with a more recent kernel...
