oracle 11g install - oracle user passwd- Authentication Token Maniperror

Hi,

I am trying to install oracle 11g in linux x86_64 GNU/Linux. I need to install the software as oracle user as per installation docs.

But the machine which I got has already oracle enterprise manager and has oracle user under dba groups and I do not know the password.

So I was trying to reset the oracle user password and getting the following issue.

$ sudo su -
[root@hdg01jj]#passwd oracle
Changing password for user oracle
passwd: Authentication Token Manipulation error

I tried removing the password then also
[root@hdg01jj]#passwd -d oracle
Removing password for user oracle
passwd: Error

How do I change the password then? Please help as I am very new to linux world.

Thanks
cdhar

You need to ask the person who gave you the box for the passwd; I take it this is a legal transaction.

(Its possible that the original setup used distributed passwd system eg NIS/LDAP ... similar to the concept of AD in MS-Windows)

You really need to get the setup/history info of this box from the previous owner.
