optimization flags and kernel compiling

what kernel optimization flags? How would i change them and what values should i give them?
I don't know if this is necessary, but i want to compile the 2.6.8 kernel.

Hi,

manually setting CFLAGS doesn't improve performance much (as far as I've tested), rather use flags that config generates for you, just select processor type.
