Obstacle to registering for LinuxMint forum from Linux Mint

I usually prefer web based email and forum accounts.

The first page Firefox opens to when you open it in my version Linux Mint (17.2)(new install) is the Linux Mint website

http://forums.linuxmint.com/ucp.php?mode=login

I tried to register and got a registration code from their irc site.

But when tried to login, I was told username invalid, contact administrator. I was directed to start a "unix" smtp account. They asked for outgoing smtp server and outgoing username

I was going to input the other web based email account where I wanted to receive email associated with my linuxmint.com forum account, but the fields already had my linuxmint username.

I don't know if I have to set up an account using my linuxmint user name or if I can register with the site using my other email.

I have attached 2 screenshot showing what comes up.

Can just sign up for LinuxMint.com using my normal web based method?

Any help appreciated.

It looks like you clicked a "mailto://..." link, which opens the standard email client (Thunderbird or Evolution) on your system. What you see is the first run wizard where you setup all the details for your email account. This has nothing to do with Mint or the forum as such. Look again closer at the "mailto" link. Part of it should be an email address which you can use with your webmail account to write an email if you wish.

RegCode is for signups at http://community.linuxmint.com/ only.
Regular email at http://forums.linuxmint.com and it does NOT require, nor ask for a RegCode.

Perhaps I was not clear in my explanation.

yes, the reg code is for signing up on the LM forum.

but signing up requires an email and username and passwd, I assume as in most other forums.

when I tried to login to LM forum, it said I could not.

I see now. I confused forum registration with the chat window registration

I was able to register normally for the forum.

Thanks to Habitual and hortageno.

over and out.
