Network name different name is shown in the Network map
Hello,
I started a few weeks with Linux mint,
Everyting works fine and also the network works perfect for sharing with windows pc.
There is one thing i wonder Hostname = pc-linux but the name shown in the network map is PCNAS.
This makes it a bit confusing that this is not the same name as pc-linux?
And how to change this?
I assume what you mean by network map is what name is displayed in Windows file manager?
How did you configure this server and samba?
Check your /etc/samba/smb.conf file. You might have a setting like:
netbios name = PCNAS
My current understanding of how things work now days is that you need to install wsdd in order for Windows to automatically see a linux shared computer under network in Windows File manager. wsdd is the linux implementation of windows discovery which is the protocol now used to find other computers. It does not have a configuration file but does have a command line hostname setting. That requires you to change the wsdd service file.
Your DHCP client/server configuration might be setting the hostname. Are you using a DHCP reservation?
It is always appreciated when the details that led to the solution are posted. Someone else may have a similar problem and posting the details may provide a solution for them.
