Unhappy network card not working

hello friends

i am facing a strange problem, and problem is with my NIC
i have installed both windows and Red hat 5.4 in my Laptop
in Red hat i am using IP address 192.172.4.50/24.
Problem is that i am unable to ping other PC in the network. Firewall is off. Actually when i boot red hat, at the time when it activates the eth0, after activating light stops blinking in the Nic port. after login i am able to ping myself but not other hosts.
i have reinstall the OS again but problem is sustain. and in windows i did not find any problem.

again i tried one more thing that is i made a change in eth0 conf file not to activate eth0 at boot ("ONBOOT=no")
then restart the system. after restart light blinks in the nic port.
but after login as i type this command "ifup eth0" to activate eth0 to establish communication, light stops blinking the NIC port. and it makes me isolate from the network.

PLZ help me what kind of problem this is.

THANKS

I was in this situation ( Intel server, intel e1000 NIC, my desktop machine has an AC'97 Sound card and after a kernel update I have to recompile and reinstall the driver for it despite the kernel has its own driver ) and for the solution I downloaded the latest Linux driver of my NIC and compiled, installed.

Sometimes there are modifications, bugfixes in the NIC's software and the driver you have in you kernel tree may not work. The manufacturers always release updated drivers for their products.

Have you tried "sudo ifconfig eth0 192.172.4.50/24 up"? If this works you'll also need to add a default gateway with something like "sudo route add default gw <gateway addr> eth0.
