Need help with rio500 driver

I cannot get any of the rio drivers i have tried for linux to detect my Rio Cali 256MB. I have tried using both rio500 and rioutil. when i try to use rio500 i get this message

Could not open /dev/usb/rio500
Verify that the rio module is loaded and your Rio is
connected and powered up.

and i read that riountil doesnt work with a rio500 player which i think mine is because when i check /dev/usb there is a rio500 file.

What happens if you treat that thing as a removable disk? In other words, try to copy a file to it?

i got it working to the point of detecting my Mp3 player and is probably a stupid question but how would i stat the song i want to upload.

linux:/dev/usb # rioutil -a /home/ohler/Documents/Shared/Aerosmith - Dream On.mp3
Attempting to open Rio and retrieve song list....done
Free space on Internal Memory is 41.3 MB.

Your file has white space in it. You need to enclose it in quotes or rename the file.

Try "/home/ohler/Documents/Shared/Aerosmith - Dream On.mp3"
instead of /home/ohler/Documents/Shared/Aerosmith - Dream On.mp3

RioUtil was looking for a file named /home/ohler/Documents/Shared/Aerosmith.
