multiple kernels in mandriva 2009.0 free

hello world, is it possible for multiple kernels to exist in a single linux installation?
I have mandriva 2009.0 free installed. I installed some updates and now my grub menu(graphical) shows more entries? why?

One of them is a kernel update. The new one will be used by default on boot up. There's no harm in keeping the previous kernel. If things don't seem to be working correctly with the new kernel you can always boot up the previous kernel. Personally I keep two kernels just in case. If there are no problems with the new one, I get rid of the oldest one when the next kernel update is performed.

You can have as many kernels as you want for a single distro. It also works the other way around. You can use the same kernel to boot many distros as well. Just change the root parameter in the kernel line to point to another partition with a different install.
