somebody must have mentioned this already, but i'll say it again:
Linux usually comes as a bootable live medium - i.e. you write it to a USB stick or burn it to a DVD, then you can boot into it and try it out, without ever touching your existsing windows install.
if that works, i say you're good to install.

you might want to consider asking questions on linux mint forums, if that's what you're interested in.
