A lot of users know how to perform maintainence on Windows systems, using maintainence tools such as Scandisk, Defragmenter, Registry Checker, or the Norton equivalents such as Disk Doctor, Speed Disk and WinDoctor.

I've read that the nature of Linux filesystems is such that they do not require defragmentation. But surely a disk health checking program or system file checker should be run regularly. What are the common system utilities for Linux and where can I get them? I'm using SuSE 8.2, so if there's anything in particular I should know, please tell me.

you can try fsck and defragfs

fsck is run for you automatically every so many boots to check the file system, and in the event of a bad shutdown it runs on reboot. of course you can also run it manually and as far as i know every linux distro comes with fsck by defalut since it is part of your basic file system tools
