Talking Linux + Games + Game Engine

I have already stated, I converted to Linux by force, but that's not the point..

I would like to learn how to create a game engine. Before I do so, I would like to know which Linux OS would create/be the best environment to support this?

I love playing games. As a newbie, I understand that I can't insert a disc, install and start playing like under windows OS. I would like to know which Linux OS would create/be the best environment to support this?

I have noticed the program 'Cedega' being mentioned within posts that appear when the word 'Games' is used in 'search forum'. What's it's significance with Games? What does it do? How to use it?
