linux container host os and container os question

Hi

I am playing around with LXC to famalirize myself with containers. I have the following question: it is my understanding with docker your host OS and container OS have to be the same.

But I am looking at LXC it has options to create many different containers that have different OSes like ubuntu/centos/opensuse etc while the host OS is, for example, ubuntu.

Why is that?

Thanks

Both, Docker and LXC, allow you to run any Linux distribution in their containers, regardless which host distribution you use.
