Can anyone help? The icons on my desktop have disappeared, can anyone help me in getting them back?

Hi. Welcome to LQ.
Make sure you haven't removed the files from you desktop folder.

Right clicking on your desktop and selecting desktop settings is a good place to start.

You may also want to provide more information about which flavour of Linux you are using. Linux Cinnamon is merely just a desktop environment that runs on top of your OS

Open your file manager and look in /home/<your-user-name>/Desktop/.

There's an applet you can add to a panel called "Restart Cinnamon" - you'll probably have to update your applets, but then you'll have a fix if it happens again.
There is also an applet to kill a runaway process you can put on a panel, too. very handy.
