One task at a time...that's odd, I recall there to be an odd distro that's just like that: one thing at a time...seems odd.
We may just have a mistery on our hands here. Allow me to do an experiment here: I'll set up a box with something (hmm, let's see, how about CrunchBang...okay, and I'll set up something pallatable: XFCE as desktop) and install BOINC on that box, just to see where I end up as far as the stats go...
Anyting I need to enter as values (never used BOINC before ) to simulate your situation?

Let me know when you're setup to install the BOINC software and I'll walk you throught it.
Starting point is the BOINC Program... http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
Do you have an account with BOINC?
You need to keep the same username and password that BOINC recognizer.
If you are new, you'll see that option. Just remember to retain that login info.
