java and non-GUI RH8

I was wondering if there are any non-GUI programs that come with RH8 that would work to develop Java. Also, I don't know much about Java but I do know that you have to compile a class file and an executable file or something like that...are there compilers that will do that that are also non-GUI? I really would like to learn some Java, but can't run a GUI and don't have an internet connection

Yes, in order to compile java source code you have to download java sdk (standard development kit) which has java compiler : javac
and many more tools. You can run that from commandline- in fact its meant to be run from commandline but there are some IDE's that make use of that compiler and give use a GUI. You compile a .java file which is source code (in plain text) and then you compile it. This gives you a .class file which is binary(machine language) and runs on computer.
