The Atom is just a low-wattage i686 chip; it is well supported by the Linux kernel, so you should be able to use any Linux distro you want (including Ubuntu 9.04). If you are not sure, boot with the option to "try Ubuntu with no change to your computer" and test it for a while. Good luck!
