"invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character" using knoppix to BU ntfs drive


I was simply backing up a HP laptop hard drive to a USB WD Mypassport and it stopped with this error.
Now the WD wont mount properly on windows. When connect it I get the
"you must format this drive" alert. I didn't format it, but did create an image of it to try to rescue what was on it before the attempted transfer.
My forensics software(FTK) indexed 375 gigs of data from it, but reports it as residing all in file slack. Since it didn't over write much, if any, shouldn't there be a way to recover that data? I have RStudio and Acronis, but they haven't been very successful. Looking at trying a few more but wanted to see if you guys had an answer before this turns into an epic testing wormhole.
Thanks for any ideas...
