Smile Installing VLC in CentOS5


I'm a new user in Linux. I have installed Centos,but i don'nt know how to install softwares in linux,is it same as windows ? I tried to install VLC in my os using the "software installer",but it shows the message "no packages are selected". i would like to install VLC media player in CentOS5. so please provide me the information regarding the installation.

yum install VLC

First u need to download the VLC RPM from internet for u r distro then u can just use

rpm -ivh *****.rpm to install vlc player.

i have tried doing it on red hat but it requires a lot of dependencies, so if u get the same error then u will have to download the required dependencies also.

Which is why he should use yum - it sorts out the dependency issue

Most likely you have to enable the RPMForge repository. Follow instructions here if you're not experienced about that.

"no packages are selected" sounds like you did something incorrectly in the package manager. Have you used it previously to install things?
