Installing Buffalo External DVD Drive

I have a Dell mini 910 running on Ubuntu 8.04 and needed to add an external DVD drive. As I was told that a Buffalo DVSM P58U2/B would run on a plug and play basis, I got one, but now I find that this is not so, and I wondered if anyone knew what needs tweaking in order to install it?

You shouldn't have to do anything. What problem are you having exactly? Do you get any sort of an error message, or does the device just not do anything?
