Installed the latest nVidia drivers from nvidia.com, can't get desktop now

I don't know what stupidity posessed me to do this, the download has never worked for me and always gives me the same results of screwing everything up in some unique new way for me.
How can I undo this and go back to having X start (and work) again?
I was using the nvidia-319 from the ubuntu repository, and having other issues, I tried updating it. Since there was nothing newer from apt, I decided maybe the download from nvidia will work. Long answer shortened: lol no.

So, I'm sitting here on my phone, playing ASCII space invaders from terminal on my desktop with no clue what to do.

I reinstalled the same version, it didn't work. Try a lower versi0n, it allows replacing the latest kernel module. I have no clue why/how that works, but thatever, will just re-upgrade to 319 again.

Sorry for typos, I fat-finger keys so much and don't like auto-correct because it makes me say dumb things, hate typing on phones.

For what it's worth, I always stick with the version of the nvidia driver that is provided in the Ubuntu repositories and I never have problems with it. With Ubuntu it is always better to stick with the tested and trusted packages that are provided in the Ubuntu repos.

If you simply must have the latest (and hopefully greatest) nvidia driver on your Ubuntu system, the best way to do it would be to add the Ubuntu-X team ppa repository to your system as described here:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
http://askubuntu.com/questions/10452...l-drivers-tool
That second link shows you how to remove those drivers as well.
Use them at your own risk if you must.
