installation issue: unable to install Rhel4

Hi ,

I have a P4 machine with 768 MB Ram , 80 gb Sata harddrive and an additional 20 gb ide harddrive (for Linux).

I am trying to install rhel4 in my machine which already has windows xp installed on it .

I have 4 partitions , c:/ my primary and d: / and e:/ f:/ which I want to use for windows .

when I insert the Red hat cd and run the askmethod it starts the running at gets stuck at a point.

This is the message it displays

"USB universal host controller interface driver 2.2 ""

does not return anyother error .just sits there.

I read that some prev linux versions did not support sata harddrive and so I disabled the sata and just used the ide drive , it is still getting stuck at the same message.

I am not sure wat this message means , tried asking this to couple of guys who are good at this , the only suggestion they gave me is to disable the usb controller in bios and then retrying it.

I am yet to do that , but is there anything else that could be done.

Any help will be of great use.

What is "askmethod"?
Are you booting from the install CD?
What steps does it go thru before it gets stuck?

Hi ,

I was doing the Linux askmethod text aftr inserting the first cd.

I have thoroughly checked my resources , the only think which I doubted was the sata hard disk. BUt they say that Rhel 4 does support sata.

Again I passed that stage , after disabling the usb controller on the bios , I was able to get to the installation.

Now I have a new issue.
This is wat had happened.

To check whether the cd was is good condition , I went ahead and checked it in my friends machine with my ide hard disk.
I installed LInux in his machine and it did get installed without any issues.

SO after confirming that it is not the cd , we connected the hard disk to my machine.I disabled my sata hard disk .so now the machine boots up in linux , It starts loading up the linux , passes to a point after u get the option press ''I'' for interactive startup , then it says loading or detecting scsi ati drivers .
then it stays that way.

This happens when I start the machine with the sata and usb disabled in bios and with no linux cd in my rom.

When i boot the machine with the Linux cd in the rom , when I try to reinstall it comes up with a ""segmentation fault "" in a file initrd or rc , not sure.

I know that is a file in linux which gets executed after the kernel is loaded.

Any ideas what I need to do this.

One more question that I would like to ask is which one is a better option.
going for a dual boot , or allocating one hard disk for win and another for Linux.

I have not lost my mind, it's backed up on the server.... and the network is down!"
