I need a bash script (or other command) which will ignore a particular directory. I have an Ubuntu machine with (uncaring) backups in the main disk.
Great; since you need a bash script, you can easily write one. If you need help, post what YOU have written/done/tried on your own, and tell us where you're stuck, and we'll be happy to help. Read the "Question Guidelines" link in my posting signature.
We are not going to write your scripts for you; this is not a help desk.
Please remember that all LQ members are volunteers and not paid support, including yourself.
The way LQ works best is if you try to accomplish your project and we're happy to help.
Do you need assistance starting with writing bash scripts?
Have you considered what command line calls you'd make to accomplish what you wish to do in a script? If so, then you're largely ready to script things.
